Matthew Kear, NYPD Police Officer Dead; Obituary & Cause Of Death

New York Police Department Officer Matthew Kear is remembered for his dedication and passion after his tragic death.

Oceanside resident Matthew Kear, a police officer with the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st precinct, passed away.

Kear’s father, Stephen Kear, a former 4th precinct police officer, posted on social media to confirm his son’s passing on Saturday, January 25, 2025. The cause of death was not mentioned.

“It is with a very Heavy and broken heart that I want to let you know our beloved son Matthew passed away on Saturday,” Stephen wrote. “Matthew had so much Love to give which he gave freely to everyone who knew him,”

Project Patriot 22, which aims to increase awareness of mental health issues within the law enforcement, military, and veteran groups, expressed their sorrow for Kear’s demise.

“If you or someone you know may be struggling please don’t hesitate to reach out!” they said.

On April 2, 1997, Matthew “Matt” Kear was born in Oceanside. Before returning and undergoing training to become a Nassau County Police Department officer, he joined and served in the U.S. Navy. In keeping with his father, who was an officer in the 4th precinct during his prime, he was a PO in the 1st Precinct.

Kear was a committed member of the Nassau Police Veterans Association (NPVA) and always went above and beyond to support police, veterans, and the NPVA, according to the organization. He loved the New York Islanders and the Buffalo Bills.

Kear’s family notified the details of his funeral. Towers Funeral Home, located at 2681 Long Beach Road, Oceanside, New York, will be open for visits on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, and Thursday, January 30, 2025. The funeral mass will take place in St. Anthony’s Church, located at 110 Anchor Ave., Oceanside, NY, on January 31, 2025, at 9 a.m.
